The bargains we turned down.

Why the numbers mislead. These fees are low because a government or foundation pays most of the true cost — the "discount" is a subsidy, not an inefficiency you can arbitrage.

You probably can't get in. Admission runs through fiercely competitive local exams, ballots or catchments, usually in the local language and on the local timetable. A family arriving mid-career rarely has a live route in.

Selection does much of the work. When a school admits the top fraction of a percent of applicants, its results tell you about its intake as much as its teaching. The same child would likely excel in many settings.

The offer is national, not international. National curriculum, local university pipelines, few IB/A-level routes, limited English-medium support and cohorts that are largely local — superb preparation for a local life, a poor fit for a globally mobile one.

Budgets show elsewhere. Public funding rarely stretches to the facilities, co-curricular breadth, small classes and pastoral staffing that fee-charging peers use those fees to buy.

The trade-offs are different here — and honest. The fee often buys world-class training in one discipline, with academics compressed, outsourced or online alongside. Comparing it to a full K-12 fee is apples to oranges, which is exactly why the value lens overrates it.

They're for the committed, not the curious. Entry is by audition or trial against global competition, and the timetable assumes your child's life revolves around the discipline. For that child, these can be the best money in education. For everyone else, they aren't an alternative to a school at all.

Narrow exits, by design. The pathway points at companies, conservatoires and academies. Families should weigh what happens at 16 or 18 if the vocation changes.
